Scottish Dancing Bands
|
Highly recommended. Site contains a large list of ceilidh bands throughout the UK and further afield, including locations and contact details. This is also an excellent site for links to other Scottish music and Scottish Country Dance resources. It even gives hints and tips on how to run a ceilidh/Scottish country dance.

UK based online retailer of music books, including Scottish, Irish, Fiddle and other Folk music. Specific recommendations include: O'Neill's The Irish Music Collection 1001 Irish jigs, reels, hornpipes and other tunes; The Fiddler's Fakebook nearly 500 jigs, reels, rags hornpipes with a slight American flavour; Aly Bain: 50 Fiddle Solos there are some great tunes in the book, but more importantly it comes with a CD of Aly playing them as they should sound - and how most of the rest of us aspire to play them.

Amazon.co.uk has a large selection of ceilidh music CDs, books on ceilidh dances and some sheet music. The dance books will cover all the popular dances and also have some that are unique to them. Specific recommendations include: Scottish Ceilidh Dancing with over 50 dances you won’t be spoiled for choice, good background info and glossary; Let's Have a Ceilidh: A Guide to Scottish Dancing written by Robbie Shepherd with over 25 dances, it is very much in Robbie’s style. It includes some music and suggestions of other tunes for dances (selected by Jim Johnstone); The Scottish Ceilidh Collection for Fiddlers: Volumes 1 and 2 we have Vol 3 of the series (and there is a 4th) but the listing of tunes in Vols 1 & 2 make this a worthwhile purchase if you don’t have any music to start with and it matches the tunes to the dances for you.
For US visitor the following is also available from amazon.com: The Scottish Ceilidh Collection for Fiddlers: Volumes 1 and 2

This is not a online retailer we have experience of. It sell Scottish Gifts, Crafts, Music and Videos. But it is the only store we have found to date which sells a dance instruction book by The Occassionals called Footnotes: The Dances.
Among the 17 listed dances (including the popular ones) are a couple of dances that aren’t in the others noted above, in particular the Basket Dance (or Cumberland Square Eight). This book is a personal favourite.

HOW TO FIND ANOTHER CEILIDH BAND
We believe it’s important that you find the ceilidh band that you want. If you’ve arrived at this page from another site and missed the band page we suggest you go there first to find out more about us, or listen to us before moving on. However, if we are definitely not what you are looking for then simply entering “ceilidh band” into a search engine will get you an exceeding long, somewhat random, list of websites. Here are our top tips to help narrow your search down.
- Start with the Scottish Dancing Bands link, it lists descriptions of bands, where they are based, their line ups, where they will travel to and contact information of a variety of ceilidh and Scottish dance bands, all in one handy place;
- if you do wish to use a search engine include a location in your search text eg “ceilidh band Aberdeen”;
- if you’re looking for singing, folk music or pop music then include that in the text as well;
- try “scottish dance band” as an alternative search description;
- we have included links to two popular search engines below, just enter your text and go. The results will open in the current window.
